Why insulate?
According to the Energy Saving Trust, around one third of your home’s heat is lost through external walls. Many homes built before the 1940s were constructed with solid brick walls, which means there is no cavity between the bricks. Instead, the bricks are tied together to form one solid wall. These buildings are strong and timeless, but they have very poor insulation value.
The government is tackling this issue by installing high‑performance solid wall insulation nationwide in an effort to reduce CO₂ emissions. More people are also looking for ways to improve the EPC ratings of their properties.
High heating bills
People living in these homes often use excessive heating during the cold winter months in an attempt to keep warm. Because of the poor insulation value, a large portion of the heat generated is literally pulled through the walls. Heating is then turned up high and left on for long periods, creating very expensive energy bills.
